it is a mostly faithful adaptation of the novel that gives it a little more hope, which makes it a lot easier to watch. even an uplifting take on the story is heavy. the film is very well made and really captures the struggle of the okies well. watched as part of scavenger hunt 40 my list | jasmeet's master list read more

"i'll be all around in the dark... i'll be everywhere. wherever you can look - wherever there's a fight so hungry people can eat... i'll be there. wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy... i'll be there..." -tom joad "what's it all about, alfie?": well the ghost of tom joad must be with us all today. it's crazy to me how much opposition this apparently faced in 1940. people threatened to boycott as soon as they found out the novel was being filmed, and they had to film some parts secretly to avoid people disrupting the filming because they growers and businessmen didn't want the story told.... read more
