i'd forgotten just how long this was. when i started the film i got a bit of a shock. this time i watched the longer cut with the black freighter inserted. i never took to that story in the source material and i don't really see much benefit to it being here either. i think it was best served as a seperate feature on the dvd. to my memory this is only the second time i've seen this. i think time has served it well. it's a very faithful and well thought out adaption of a well loved piece of work. i'm aware some people have a problem with the ending but i agree with the changes. they work read more

i probably shouldn't have rewatched this one. it was definitely on a pedestal for me, heavily steeped in nostalgia. i'm being stone cold literal when i say the existence of this movie changed my life, so naturally i maintained a deferential bias for years. over a decade. but damn, zack snyder really didn't get the comic, huh? i believe he understood that fans would only accept a nearly 1:1 reproduction of the graphic novel, and so he set about to do just that. but his flourishes, style, and presentation of the movie betray his very surface level engagement of the source material. if zack read more

with the ultimate cut, it definitely stuffs a lot into the story, but it all plays out well enough. definitely not a typical superhero story, and i think that's what makes it good. i kinda wish it kept the original ending though. read more

this rating is for the version i watched, which is based on "the ultimate cut" but also incorporates the "under the hood" faux-documentary segments into the film. what works: this film has a very difficult line to tread... it has to serve as a compelling film version of a very dense story but still be accessible for non-fans (and this was in a pre-mcu world). it also has the unadmirable task of adapting what most comic fans call "the best comic story of all time". it actually succeeds remarkably well on both fronts. the look of the characters is believable, casting is mostly spot on, and the... read more
