people can analyze and deconstruct this movie all they want, but as far as i'm concerned this is one of the best war movies i've seen. watching johnny rico go from naive recruit to hardened soldier is an experience i'll never forget, and a true pleasure. read more

fun fact, this was the first r rated movie i ever saw, and i saw it in theaters. i was four years old. my dad felt super guilty about it because both my parents were relatively safe with what i saw until i was around 12-13. this was deep end r. people being sliced in half, disemboweled, eaten... oh! and full-frontal nudity! so yeah, my dad didn't know it was rated r when he took me to see it, and always regretted not walking out immediately. i didn't regret it, of course. i loved the movie and always have. it's grown with me as i've gotten older, and along with a cliff-notes lesson on what... read more

so this was sold to me as a critique of military and as a metaphor for racism. those things are definitely there but i wish the satire was a bit more biting and the whole thing didn't still work as a popcorn sci-fi adventure. so this is the final film that's been on my watchlist for 5 years and i'm really glad to be done watching these because only one of them was really enjoyable. probably gonna rewatch something i know i love tomorrow. read more
