man, what a good movie! i thought it wouldn't hold up after all these years but i was wrong. still great and so touching. i defy you not to have a tear in your eye when forrest says "is he smart?". hanks is mesmerizing here as are the effects which haven't aged a day. the script is funny, sweet, epic and really tightly put together and zemeckis directs as good as he ever has. and the cinematography, my gosh is it ever stunning. it may not be the best picture of 1994 and it may not deserve the award for best picture for that reason but it's still pretty god damn great (and i am shocked at the... read more

earnestness and sentimentality are not in style. what was an outright cultural phenomenon in the '90s has become something a younger generation of cinephiles looks at much more cynically. i'm sure most of them have never eaten at the bubba gump shrimp co. and probably have an almost visceral urge to mockingly shout "run forrest, run!" at the first mention of this film. i feel fortunate to be able to rewatch this movie with less jaded, cynical eyes and enjoy it for what it's doing. there's a great early screen test included among the special features on this dvd. it may actually be a better... read more
