much like margin call, this shows you how certain people managed to see an economic disaster looming and turned it into profit for themselves. guaranteed to really fuck you off, but it's a hell of a good watch. read more

the big short has ended up being on of my favourite movies of the year. i didn't think it would be that good but it was. and coming from the man who did anchorman and step brothers. who would of thunk it? coming of as a cross between moneyball (without the baseball) and the wolf of wall street (without the excess), the big short tackles the housing crash from a few years ago and the men who predicted it. this could of come off as a confusing mess but adam mckay makes this as easy to digest as apple sauce. he also fills it with humour, wit, pathos, distinct characters, great acting, fantastic... read more

adam mckay has always had an undercurrent of serious intelligence bubbling up under the surface of the comedies that he has directed in his career. from talladega nights to anchorman, there are some smart jokes and satire hiding within the comedy of stupidity and immaturity. it wasn't that those films were stupid or immature in and of themselves but, rather, the stupidity of the characters and the situations became the primary vehicle through which the comedy operated. in the big short, he is packages much of the same style of intelligent humor within a story that doesn't undercut it with the... read more

+ so this is what you get when a comedy writer-director helms a drama film and everything works out in his favor: a film thats sharp, vibrant, approachable, and funny as hell. i didnt really expect that a guy who only used to make movies like anchorman could pull through directing something so entirely different, but, oh, was i more than happy to be proven wrong. adam mckay brings a light touch to his direction, making this film easy to follow even for those who dont know much about finance (im referring to myself here) and not feel like much of a burden to sit through despite the serious read more

A fabulously directed movie made by the guy who made Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and co-wrote Ant-Man. A good cast in this and the movie was quite long but a lot of it was over my head. Not being into the world of high finance I guess I lost a lot of what these guys were doing but I got the basic idea. The performances were all good as was the direction and the pace of the movie. It was in the comedy section of the recent Golden Globes but I did not see this as being comedy but it had to be put into some category so why not. read more

The housing market crash which saw the 2007-2008 financial market near collapse is memorably portrayed thanks to the superb storytelling and direction of Adam McKay and the performances across the board of Hollywood's biggest stars including Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Steve Carell. The Big Short is lauded for being historically accurate, yet for me it was the captivating performances of all involved that ensured this will live long into the memory and is an entertaining and engaging depiction of the inexcusable, greedy behaviour of the big players within the financial sector. read more
