jackson cannot be faulted for his awesome effects and action sequences, yet again. however, it felt like he was stretching the thin source material a little too far across this trilogy, and (the romantic-sideplot) parts of the screenplay felt slow and unnecessary, and dare i say, like a long-drawn wuxia (chinese-swordfighting) drama. the fluidity of drizzling gold coins and smaug's movements were impressive though. read

once again, the in-laws take baby duty so my lovely wife and i can enjoy a night out at the cinema. i was eager to see this in hfr but was let down by my local cinema not showing that format as the film had been on release for three weeks. i do not understand why that would be a reason. sadly i didn't get that info until i'd already gone 3d in the hope of catching hfr. i've never been particularly sold on 3d as the movie format of the future. my mind is not yet made up on hfr. i guess i'll be waiting longer still. anyway, fuck that. i went to see the latest part of the the hobbit and i bloody... read

better than part 1 but still not as good as the lord of the rings, the second of three knocks it out of the park with action and excitement and anticipation. thankfully no one here breaks into song and there are, unlike the first film, no needless scenes that don't carry the film forward. the barrel sequence is off the charts with one long take shot that is just awesome to behold. better in every way to the first part and has left me very excited for the conclusion. production design: 10 out of 10 cinematography: 10 out of 10 re-playability: 8 out of 10 originality: 7 out of 10 costumes: 9... read

by my estimation one of the most unfairly-maligned films of 2012 was the hobbit: an unexpected journey. the first part of peter jackson's hobbit trilogy was called out for being too long, poorly paced, containing unnecessary humor, botching the new 48 frames-per-second format and several other reasons, but for my money it was a great (if not perfect) entry into the middle earth saga. any complaints that fans may have had with the first entry, they were certainly silenced with the desolation of smaug. the second part of the tale improves on the first's by just about everyone's estimation, read

this ending on a cliffhanger that wraps up 10 minutes into the next one and then having an ed sheeran song play after speaks volumes about this trilogy read

The Hobbit's second installment is a horrid fiasco that distances itself even further from the epic adventure that is LOTR. In true soap-fashion, all we see is a set of 1D-characters plunging into one stupid situation after another. Little to no development, no redeeming factors in both script and direction. Even the visuals are suffocated by CGI, with little to no room for the world of middle-earth to breathe. The film should be, both substantive and technically, renamed the disaster of Smaug. read

Better than the first but still not incredibly satisfying. The beginning of 5 Armies should have capped this movie off for a more satisfying ending. read

The dwarves truly come into their element in this one. And I finally understand the reticence of elves. But Bilbo owns in this one. Martin Freeman's charisma adds to his badassery.
The orc ambush of the elven citadel might be the best-choreographed action scene in the whole saga.
I am so tired of all evil people being gross and ugly in these movies though. In fact, ugly people are usually the best people. Scumbags are obsessed with beauty. Would never show this film to a child. Which is weird because this is clearly not a film for adults.
But honestly, I was enjoying it way more than the... read
