miyazaki's fresh take on the little mermaid - g-rated version... we watched the first half of this movie without subtitles, and could still predict 80% of the conversations accurately :) read more

studio ghibli is the pixar of japan, they create touching animated stories featuring children that connect to audiences of all ages. ponyo is another example of this. it didn't quite click with me in the way pixar's films do, but i think that is mostly due to cultural differences. it is still much better than most animated films. read more

Ponyo is visually fantastic and striking; I love all the imagery of water and sea creatures, and the character designs match the world perfectly. This feels like the most 'for children' oriented film from Ghibli next to Totoro which I believe has a few more mature beats with the ill mother. All of their films are for children, really, but Ponyo feels incredibly lightweight without any actual consequences despite the natural disaster present, while I believe Ghibli's great films have varying levels of darker tones throughout. Ponyo is probably my favourite Ghibli character not named Totoro. Love all the small scale cutesy friendship stuff. The "fate of the world" didn't really need to be at stake but it never goes full on with the larger scale adventure stuff. Gets the balance better than a lot of kids movies, but then it's Ghibli so go figure. read more

Lisa is a reckless driver and should be off the road. But really, this movie is so magical and innocent and the animation is stunning. I wouldn't say it's one of my top favorite Ghibli movies, but only because the bar is set so high. read more

More Kid Oriented, but Still a Good Ghibli

Ponyo is a magical, fun-filled, ham-infused adventure that has a ton of childlike wonder and appeal.

For all intents and purposes, Ponyo is a great movie. I did find myself getting a bit bored as an adult watching the show, and thought that it didn't provide the same level of deep introspection that Ghibli films I've come to know and love give me (like with 'Princess Mononoke', 'Howls Moving Castle', 'Spirited Away', or 'Castle in the Sky' for example). I think that's to be expected with the young age of the main characters (about 5 years old), and makes it something that I would read more
