nominating this for the world's most distracting opening credits. with all the a's appearing first (along some other letters) there were moments when my screen just said aaa.
starting your film with half an hour of exposition and having half of it be entirely unimportant sure is an interesting choice.
the story after the infodump is good but i really don't understand why you'd put so much time and effort into something that ultimately won't matter.
the middle third is interesting and well-paced and i actually started getting into the film.
the last story act is kind of slow and the ending somewhat boring though which really drags gattaca down.
thematically, this tries to make discrimination relatable to people who don't normally experience it, i think? which really does explain why i put this on my watchlist based on a reddit recommendation.
does it do a good job of that? i don't really know. if someone is at the point where they actually need "what if the bad thing happened to you instead?" to understand why eugenics is bad might be a few steps too far removed from empathy anyway.
honestly, if this is one of the best sci-fi films of all time (which i've read in several reviews) then maybe sci-fi really isn't for me.
