Review of Curse of Chucky

i was really excited when they announced this movie. my excitement disappeared rather quickly when they announced it to be a direct to video/dvd/blu-ray release. then it was released and it got mixed reviews. as a completist i decided against purchasing it as then it would open the floodgates (i'd have to get wrong turn 2-5, cabin fever 2-4 and any other of the numerous straight to the home screen productions that suck big time). but then i was at walmart (not long after it's release) and they had the film for $5.00. i couldn't say no. so i purchased and just about an hour ago the disc was ejected from my player and after some considerable thought i am ready to write my review. curse of chucky starts off pretty bad. the opening moments are real direct to video dreck. then there is a great long take while the credits play. the next 20 minutes or so are meh and easily the worst of the franchise. again pure direct to video crapola. amongst the crap there is a great beheading. but then chucky comes to life and brad dourif once again brings joy and life to the role and in doing so to the movie. in fact the movie greatly improves once chucky is out and about killing people. the story is not the greatest, the acting could be better and some things are just dumb but the last half of the movie is actually pretty good. curse of chucky gives a back story to the original and it includes nods to the entire series. it could be the greatest direct to video sequel i have ever seen but with that said it still isn't as good a quality as the theatrical releases. i can't believe i am recommending this film but i am and if you feel at first when watching it that i am wrong just stick around for the second half as it gets much much better. it's not the best in the series, it could be the worst but still chucky fans will rejoice. 63/100
